Padres beat the Dodgers 4-1Behind a brilliant 2 hit complete game ( should have been a shutout ) by Jake Peavy, the Padres even up the series 1-1. The Dodgers scored their only run on one of the more bizarre plays that required the umpires to consult the rulebook, and for what it's worth IMO it's a rule that needs changing instantly if not sooner.
After Furcal reached 3rd on a triple, Russell Martin popped up a foul ball that carried toward the Padres dugout. Josh Bard ranged over and made a great catch, but his slide carried him into the dugout. He emerged with the ball to ensure Furcal didn't tag up from 3rd, and home plate umpire called the batter out. We all thought the play was over, but Dodger Mgr. Joe Torre came racing out of the dugout to challenge something and when all was said and done Furcal was awarded home plate. This is why MLB's official rules state in Rule 7.04(c) that if "a fielder, after having made a legal catch, falls into dugout or any other out-of-play area in possession of the ball ... the ball is dead and each runner shall advance one base without liability to be put out."..............I call BS !!
There is no way Furcal scores regardless of what happens w/o that moronic rule. He wouldn't have scored had the ball dropped since it was a foul ball, and Bard made sure he couldn't tag up. There is zero reason for that rule to have affected this game, and it did. Sorry if I homer up for Jake Peavy here, but this is our staff ace, reigning CY winner, and winner of the Triple Crown.....any earned run scored is something to keep track of......now if it's not an earned run, since it didn't impact the end of the game, it wouldn't be a big deal, but the only thing to suffer here is Jake Peavy's stats.....So again......I call BS !!!
