Padres take series behind a brillant Peavy start

Padres win 9-0

Jake Peavy was back at it again, after a little vacation for his elbow, and it didn't appear he missed a beat. Peavy went 6 shutout innings in his first start in about a month, giving up only 3 hits, walking nobody and striking out 4. He was in control from the moment he stepped on the mound, and it actually seemed like he was relying less on overpowering guys, and more on the "pitching" aspect of the game. He used his entire arsenal, and a # of batters were unhappy to see his change up screw them into the ground. He kept guys off balance, and guessing, while keeping his pitch count well in check at 72, while throwing 52 of those for strikes.

In the 1st inning the Padres gave Jake quite a bit of breathing room topped off by back to back jacks from from Brian Giles and AGon, and when the dust settled the Padres had put up a 5 spot in the first.

Giles sent a Kuroda pitch with 2 on, over the Rt/Cf wall for a 3 run shot, and then AGon deposited his 18th of the season into the LF seats sending the crowd of 36,000+ on a getaway day into a frenzy. The BEAT LA chants began and stopped only after the final pitch.

Gerut & Edgar Gonzalez also got into the action continuing their torrid pace and each logging another multi-hit game. EGon has his BA up to .322, and is continuing to show he belongs playing at this level. While Jody Gerut has his BA up to .274, and is showing that he's back and can play the OF with the best of them.

The boys are off to Cleveland now for a 3 game series, and then to the Bronx for a 1998 rematch with the Yankees. So stay tuned Friar fans......

PEAVY'S BACK !!!

Great news Friar fans.......... Jake is taking the bump today in the finale.......

SAN DIEGO -- Jake Peavy, the reigning National League Cy Young Award winner, is on his way back to the Padres' starting rotation.

Peavy will be activated from the disabled list to start on Thursday against the Dodgers at PETCO Park. It will be his first appearance since May 14.

Peavy was placed on the disabled list on May 20 (retroactive to May 15) with a sprained right elbow.

Peavy, who was 4-3 with a 2.91 ERA in nine starts, threw a simulated game on Saturday, throwing 61 pitches to teammates before the Padres
faced the Mets. He admitted some degree of rust, though pronounced himself healthy.

"It wasn't crisp by any means, but I came out of it healthy," Peavy said. "Just have to get better than that before I pitch in a Major League baseball game, I know that."

Peavy will also start on Tuesday against New York at Yankee Stadium.

"We felt the timeline was right to slot him in there Thursday," Padres manager Bud Black said.

Padres get unexpected power and win game 2

Randy Wolf was outstanding AGAIN last night going 7 strong, giving up only 4 hits, walking only 1, striking out 9, and surrendering only 1 run. It was a brilliant start by the crafty veteran who had it all working, and had it all working in all parts of the zone. He kept the Dodgers off balance all night, and was never really in trouble ever.

But the real story happened in the 1st inning, when Edgar Gonzalez connected off of a Billingsley fastball and sent it off the 2nd deck in LF for his 1st major league HR. Edgar has been playing full time since Iguchi hit the DL, and quite frankly is making a case for himself as an everyday starter. He's currently hitting .296BA w/ a .367 OBP. Not bad at all

Khalil Greene got into the act with a BOMB the opposite way onto the beach in Rt/Ctr for his 6th of the year, and the Padres went on to an easy victory in game 2. Khalil has been having his issues with the bat this year, and seems to be struggling overall for that matter, but it's a very good sign when he's able to go the opposite field with such authority. It could be a sign that he's coming out of his funk and primed for one of his famous white hot streaks. Lets all hope that's the case.

FYI Friar Fans.........Jake Peavy is slated to toe the rubber in the series finale tomorrow......so don't forget to tune in for his 1st game back.

Padres lose game 1

Maddux was outstanding in his start against the hot young Dodger prospect Clayton Kershaw, but wouldn't factor in the decision yet again. Maddux went 6 strong only giving up 1 run, and turned it over to the bullpen with a 2-1 lead, but the 7th inning proved costly as the defense and bullpen couldn't get out of their own way. The Dodgers put up 4 runs in the 7th, then 2 more in the 9th, and that was all she wrote. The 5 game streak came to a screeching halt, and the boys let another winnable game slip away. The top of the order did their jobs getting on base, but the bottom of the order failed miserably to move or score them when they did.

Time to reload and get ready for tomorrow.

2008 Draft Results

Courtesy of Mad Friars, with a little modification from Planet Padres, here is the information pertaining to the Padres and their day 1 picks. Please follow the link to Mad Friars for more information, and if you really are interested in MiLB, this is the single best place to frequent, and well worth the price of upgrading to get the INside information also......

With six picks in the first 111, the San Diego Padres can continue to stockpile a farm system that has undergone tremendous change over the last several years. *Updated frequently*
First-round, 23rd overall:

Allan Dykstra

Position: First Base

Wake Forest University

Dykstra hit a team-leading .323 with 16 home runs and 50 RBIs in 2008. The San Diego native led the Deacons in hitting, RBIs, runs, home runs, slugging and on-base percentage. Dykstra, who reached base safely in all but four games this season, ranked among the ACC leaders in home runs, on-base percentage and walks.

"Outstanding plate discipline and big time power make Dykstra an intriguing prospect, but his inconsistency at the plate continues to frustrate scouts." - Frankie Piliere.

First-round supplemental, 42rd overall:

(for losing Doug Brocail to the Houston Astros)

Jaff Decker (no pic)

Position: Outfield

Sunrise Mountain HS

"Decker has an interesting and diverse set of tools. Armed with a fastball that reaches 93 MPH and a powerful lefty stroke, it will be intriguing to see where Decker ends up." - Frankie Piliere.

First-round supplemental, 46th overall:

(for losing Mike Cameron to the Milwaukee Brewers)

Logan Forsythe

Third baseman

Arkansas

Forsythe was voted to the All-SEC First Team by the Southeastern Conference coaches after hitting .352. In SEC play, the slick fielding third baseman hit .371 and led the team with seven home runs.

Second-round, 69th overall:

James Darnell

Third Baseman

South Carolina

"The rest of Darnell's game may not be on par with his plus power but the power is game usable enough to make him a strong third base prospect." - Frankie Piliere.

Third-round, 101st overall:

Blake Tekotte

Outfielder

Miami

Tekotte hit .371 with 11 homers and 27 extra base hits over 58 games for the Hurricanes, scoring a team-leading 76 runs.

Third-round supplemental, 111th overall:

(for not signing 2007 third-rounder Tommy Toledo)

Sawyer Carroll ( no pic )

Outfielder

Kentucky

"Seniors tend to get overlooked but it is hard to look past this slugger's monstrous spring at the plate." Frankie Piliere.

Carroll, a first-team Louisville Slugger All-American, finished as the career record holder for batting average (.386). Carroll had a prolific 2008 season while leading UK to the most wins in program history (44) and a NCAA Regional Championship appearance. Carroll led the SEC with the only average above .400 (.416), adding 19 home runs and a school-record 83 RBI. Carroll, a right-fielder from Henryetta, Okla., ripped 22 doubles and a club-high three triples, swiping 12-of-12 bases.

Fourth-round, 135th overall:

Jason Kipnis

Outfielder

Arizona State

The outfielder hit .363 with 14 homers and 36 extra base hits across 59 games for the Wildcats. he also drew more walks than strikeouts and stole 24 bags in 28 attempts.

Padres SWEEP the Mets

Gerut & Giles both went 3 for 5, but Paul McAnulty was the guy having a great weekend, and he capped it off by going 2 for 3 with 2 RBI keeping his team in the game.
But the real story came in the bottom of the 8th inning when Tony Clark was asked to pinch hit. Up until today Clark has been virtually invisible on this team, but he 'announced his presence with authority' as he smashed a 3 run HR over dead center and put the Padres on top for good, and securing the 4 game sweep over the Mets. It was a no doubter and all Carlos Beltran could do was make a vain effort and watch as the ball sailed 420' over his head. It was Clarks 1st HR as a Padre and it came at the expense of a Wagner blown save.

Enter Hoffy, bells tolled and when the dust settled Trevor had notched Save # 14/538.

Padres win again, and another 2-1 final

Cha Seung Baek took the mound and was solid over 6 innings, giving up 7 hits, 1 run, 2 walks and logging 2 k's.

The Padres could only muster 6 hits but finally cashed in on more dramatics off the bat of Scott Hairston. After shutting the
door on the Mets in the top of the 10th, Scott was set to leadoff the inning, and with one swing of his bat sent a ball over the Lft/ Ctr fence walkoff style.
This is becoming a thing for Scott Hairston, who has a flare for the dramatic, and has more than one clutch HR over the past two years.

Padres win another close one

Randy Wolf has been one of the best offseason FA acquisitions in recent history, and he came with a health risk warning, but tonight he was brilliant again. Wolf went 7 innings, gave up 1 run on 7 hits, while walking 2 and logging 2 K's on is way to his 4th win of the season. He used his defense behind him like it was his plan all along.

With the bases loaded in the 6th inning, Scott Hairston might have saved the game with a diving catch in the left center gap. It further shows that he's more than capable of backing up the position or getting the occasional spot start out there. He did what Edmonds can only dream of doing now.
And the day had some bad news also........While trying to avoid being hit by a ground ball between 2nd and 3rd, Iguchi came down wrong on his shoulder and seperated it. He left the game immediately and Edgar Gonzalez took over.

Iguchi to DL, likely out four to six weeks
Padres second baseman separated right shoulder Thursday

Padres take game 1 from the Mets

Well it was Josh Banks called on to welcome the NY Mets to town, and he picked right back up from where he left off in his last start. Being virtually untouchable ! Banks went 6 strong innings, scattered 5 hits, walked zero (again), and struckout 3. Unfortunately he would not factor into the decision, but as we all know he earned the W even if it's not on his column. This was his 2nd outstanding start in a row, and with Peavy coming back to the rotation soon, something will have to give, but I doubt it's going to be the spot in the rotation occupied by Josh Banks. This kid is rapidly earning a name for himself in the NL.

The Mets failed to score in the 9th inning, and left the door open for more late inning heroics, but the question was could the Padres threaten, and then who would come up big this time.
Scott Schoeneweis walked the bases loaded, and the stage was set for a PMac to come up with the big clutch hit........until he was drilled by the first pitch of his AB, forcing in the run from 3rd and resulting in a Padres win. PMac was mobbed at 1st the second he got there, and the first person to arrive was Trevor Hoffman....Not exactly how they wrote the script for a victory, but in this 2008 season I'm pretty sure we're all wondering what's next for bizarre happenings.......I guess so long as we win, who cares how ?

Padres avoid being swept by Cubs

Sorry I was out of town on business for a couple days, so all I'm going to do is give you quick snapshot updates for the Padres/Cubs series.

Padres had big leads in each of the first two games, but were unable to hold on to either for the win, but in game 3 Maddux was brilliant and the bullpen slammed the door, and Hoffy got the save.

Padres blow shot at Sweep over Giants

Padres lose 4-3

Randy Wolf once again had a very good start wasted by the bullpen, or you could say was rescued by the offense, only to have that wasted by the bullpen. Wolf went 6 strong, K-ing 5, scattering 4 hits and giving up only 1 walk. He left the game on the hook for the loss, but in the 8th the Padres scratched across a run to tie it up forcing extra innings.

In the 10th inning AGon put the Padres on top with a two run blast to deep CF, and it looked like the Padres would take the sweep. Adrian is poised to have a monster season and already has 50 RBI !

Enter Trevor Hoffman who had saved 8 straight and appeared to have returned to his dominant form. But that was not to be the case this night. Trevor quickly gave up two hits, and with the count full, served up a 2 run game tying triple to Lewis. With first base open and the game winning run now at 3rd, Castillo grounded to Edgar Gonzalez, who seemed to not know where to go with the ball.

Game over !

Josh Banks arrives on scene

Padres win 5-1

Josh Banks makes his first start as a friar in place of Chris Young, and is utterly impressive tossing a complete game vs. San Francisco. Banks scattered 6 hits, walked none, giving up 1 run, while striking out 5 in his debut.

What's most impressive maybe......he only needed 101 pitches total. Not a bad debut at all. Time will tell if KT found another diamond in the rough.

Great job Josh !!
