Storm routes 66ers, win 8-1

Lake Elsinore, CA – The offense came alive tonight at The Diamond in Lake Elsinore as the Storm eight runs off of 12 hits against Inland Empire to take game one of the three game series against the 66ers.

Storm leftfielder Everett Williams hit a booming shot to center field that landed him a triple in the first that set the tone for the evening. Williams would finish the game going three for four to be the third Storm player to do so this season. He eventually scored off a Rymer Liriano groundout to give the Storm the lead 1-0.

After starter Matt Andriese only allowed one hit, no runs, and no errors in the top of the second the Storm found the tempo they have been looking for at the plate.

In the bottom of the second the Storm reached base first by Connor Powers who was hit by a pitch that came up in the positive column for Lake Elsinore. Powers scored on the next play as Chris Bisson hit a double in the left field corner doubling their lead. After back-to-back walks by Rico Noel and Cory Spangenberg up came Williams with the bases loaded. Williams hit a rocket to right center field clearing the bases and giving the Storm a 5-1 lead going into the third.

Andreise again allowed no runs and the Storm picked up two more runs off the first home run for the Storm this season hit by catcher Eddy Rodriguez with a man on now up 7-0.

The 66ers lone run came in the top of the fourth as Travis Witherspoon singled, stole and scored on a double hit by Randal Grichuk.

The Storm tacked on one more run for good measure in the eighth via singles by Bisson, Noel and Williams to score the final run of the night.

Andreise went four innings and allowed only three hits, one run, and struck out four in the matchup.

The Storm bullpen held Inland Empire to no runs and only one walk in the final five innings.

66er Brian Diemer let up five hits, seven runs and seven errors for the loss.

The Storm had a season high in runs and hits and tonight their first five runs were extra base hits.

Tomorrow night the Storm will send Mark Hardy to the mound in the 7:05 game to duke it out against Los Angeles pitcher Jerome Williams in his final rehab start before returning to Anaheim.

Fans don’t forget tomorrow is Fat Tuesdays, tickets to the game at $14 and it is all you can eat concessions.

Thank you for all that you do!

Storm fall 7-2

Road trip to the Elsinore Storm

Well last night we took our first trip of the year up to see the Storm play. Packed up the whole famn damily and headed up. It was a fantastic night for baseball under blue skies and a temperature in the 70's. But a win was not in the cards, and the Storm fell to the Ports 7-2. It was Championship ring give away night, and they did a really great job with this for the fans.

Burch Smith came out of the gates guns blazing hitting 91, 95, 95, 96, 95 & 97 mph on his first 6 pitches, resulting in a weak fly out to CF. Unfortunately he left the ball up in the zone a few times, and was the recipient of some poor defense behind him as well as a few questionable calls by the lone umpire in the field, and eventually take the loss. He does however have a very lively arm, but conditioning might be an issue, as his velocity did dip as the game went on. Like very much what I saw initially and think his weaknesses are very correctable with a little seasoning.

Rymer Liriano left me really disappointed on this night reaching safely only once on a badly misplayed ball by the RFer and 2nd baseman. I suppose even those look like linedrives in the books, but certainly not while you're sitting there watching. Anyway I can't wait for my next trip up to see this kid. He's much bigger, and stronger than I anticipated, and I can only hope he becomes as good as many think he can be. He did make a fantastic play slamming into the RF wall which was nice to see.

The highlight of the night happened in the 1st inning when Cory Spangenberg lead off with a Triple. One thing is for sure, this guy has a great approach at the plate, knows what he's doing, showed excellent bat control, and when he did hit it can flat out motor. Below is the video.

Fox Sports San Diego ready to launch...

Well it's about time... This should be a great thing for the Padres going forward....

SAN DIEGO — Everything is in place.

The staff has been hired. Schedules have been drawn up. A slick advertising campaign — titled "The Wait Is Over" — is in place. And broadcast distribution agreements have been reached, although some still remain in limbo.

All that's missing to launch the new Fox Sports San Diego is an announcement.

That, however, is coming. Sooner rather than later is the promise.

FS San Diego has distribution agreements with Cox Communications and DirecTV. Events will air on Channel 56 on Cox and 1056 in HD. The DirecTV deal allows non-cable subscribers to get Padres games.

Neither Time Warner nor AT&T U-verse has agreed to a deal with FS San Diego. Time Warner controls about 30 percent of the San Diego cable market. FS San Diego officials, however, are confident that agreements will be reached before the start of the season.

FS San Diego, which will have offices and studios in the old Cox Channel 4 building near Petco Park, hasn't announced its deal with the Padres. But that, too, is in place.

The holdup is Major League Baseball delaying its decision to approve Jeff Moorad as owner of the Padres.

The first of five Padres spring training games is slated to air March 17, and FS San Diego officials said all regular-season games will be televised.

Cashner brings the heat avg'ing 102.2 mph

Nice to have a legit guy blowing gas out of the bully again.... Wow !! Hardball talks about Cashner...

Move over Aroldis, the National League might have a new hardest thrower. As Dan Brooks pointed out, PitchFX data had Padres reliever Andrew Cashneraveraging 102.2 mph with his fastball on Sunday. He threw 10 pitches in his scoreless innings out of the pen, all of them heaters. According to the data, they ranged between 100.5 and 103.3 mph.

For those unfamiliar with the Cashner saga, the former first-round pick debuted with the Cubs as a reliever in 2010 and then won the fifth spot in the team’s rotation a year ago, only to hurt his shoulder in his season debut. He didn’t return until September, and he was a reliever again then. The Padres acquired him for top prospect Anthony Rizzo in the offseason and immediately announced their intention to leave him in the pen, at least for 2012. He’s expected to work as a setup man in front of closer Huston Street.
Now if he can only stay healthy he can turn into that lock down back of the bullpen guy... And this might end up another holy crap type of trade....

Prospect Reports are starting to come out...

John Sickels at minorleagueball.com has his prospect report out on our boys, and for the first time in a LONG time the Padres system gets a pretty glowing review... Below are the first 14 on his list, follow the link above for the rest of his write up.

"by John Sickels on

1) Yonder Alonso, 1B, Grade B+: Acquire in the big Mat Latos deal with the Cincinnati Reds. His style of hitting should fit better in San Diego than Anthony Rizzo's. I expect Alonso will hit for average, post a strong OBP, and provide at least moderate power.

2) Yasmani Grandal, C, Grade B+: Also acquired in the Latos deal. Needs more polish on defense, although he has the tools to thrive and I'm optimistic about his glove. Like Alonso, he should provide a solid OBP with moderate power.

3) Rymer Liriano, OF, Grade B+: You can make a case to rank him above Rizzo, although they are very different players. Five Tool/Seven Skill potential is obvious, and he made strides with the strike zone last year. Scouts love him and the numbers are catching up.

4) Jedd Gyorko, 3B, Grade B+ : I believe in the bat and he can handle third base. Should hit for average, post solid OBP, with at least moderate power.

5) Robbie Erlin, LHP, Grade B+: Extremely close between Erlin and Wieland, but I'll go with Erlin due to lefty premium and nine month age edge. I know he doesn't have a blistering fastball, but the guy has superb command of deceptive stuff, plus pornographic statistics. Should do well in this ballpark.

6) Joe Wieland, RHP, Grade B+: Hard to believe they got Wieland and Erlin for Mike Adams. Like Robbie, Joe's fastball plays past it's velocity due to terrific command and impressive secondary pitches.

7) Keyvius Sampson, RHP, Grade B+: Baseball America seems oddly reserved about him, but he looks great to me, other Midwest League sources are very positive, he throws hard, his stat profile is strong, and he's athletic.

8) Casey Kelly, RHP, Grade B: Borderline B+. Kelly will rank ahead of Erlin and Wieland on most lists, and I might be undergrading him a notch, but there are some things here that hold me back from a higher grade. He didn't dominate Double-A despite repeating the league, his secondary stuff isn't as refined as Erlin/Wieland, his fastball isn't consistently faster, and he is a full year older than Erlin and almost two years older than Sampson. He still looks like a fine mid-rotation starter but I don't see him as a potential ace. I'm thinking about this grade and this one is far from final.

9) Cory Spangenberg, 2B, Grade B: Borderline B+: On-base machine with some gap power and 70-speed. Needs to polish defense but pure hitting skills are sharp. He was a slight overdraft at 10th overall but not by a terrible amount.

10) James Darnell, OF-3B, Grade B-:
I like the bat a lot, but age and positional questions preclude a higher grade. Should be a solid run producer.

11) Joe Ross, RHP, Grade B-: Could theoretically be the top pitching prospect in the system a year from now. More advanced than brother Tyson at the same age, and has a higher physical upside than the pitchers ahead of him, but let's get some data first.

12) Brad Boxberger, RHP, Grade B-: Another part of the Latos deal. Very live arm, took well to bullpen role last year. At worst he should be an effective middle reliever, and if his command holds up he has a chance to close.

13) Jaff Decker, OF, Grade B-: Seems to improve his physical conditioning every year, even stole 15 bases in '11, strong throwing arm. Patient to a fault, needs to find balance between aggression and passivity. Could put up huge numbers at Tucson.

14) Austin Hedges, C, Grade B-: Superior defensive catcher. Scouts have mixed opinions about his bat; some think he can hit for a decent average with touches of power, others don't think he'll hit enough to play regularly despite his glove. Not enough objective data yet to have a sabermetric opinion, although most catchers with a similar plus-glove/questionable-bat profile coming out of high school don't make it. If he hits, will rank much higher next year.

This was already a very deep farm system, but adding Erlin and Wieland in the Adams trade was a masterstroke. Erlin, Wieland, Kelly, and Sampson is an exciting quartet, Joe Ross could be the best of all once he gets some innings in, Bass and Oramas are not slouches, and there are a large group of solid bullpen arms ready in the near future. That doesn't even include live-armed pitchers in the "others" list like Castro, Cates, Lollis and Portillo who have high ceilings albeit with question-marks. Hernandez and Reyes could also help sooner than expected.

There is also the core of a strong offense here, with Rizzo, Darnell, Gyorko, the enigmatic Decker, broad-skilled Tekotte, and overlooked Belnome ready or almost ready for extensive major league trials. Tools hound Liriano has a high ceiling and put some things together in '11. If Donavan Tate stays on the field long enough to learn baseball, he still has star-caliber tools. Galvez, Peterson, and Rincon would all get a lot more attention in other farm systems.

All told, this is a very rich system with exciting players at all levels."

He seems to have done a fairly good job, and of course the order of the prospects is left up to opinion, but overall he seems to have them in pretty fair positioning. Good job John!
